These 1:18 planes are built with sturdy retractable wheels but must be retracted gently, each plane has its own way of opening unique to the actual plane its based from. In 1938, when the Navy contract was issued to Chance Vought to build the prototype Corsair, aviation design was advancing at an explosive rate. Aircraft designed five years earlier were open cockpit, fabric covered biplanes with fixed undercarriage. The Corsair was very different. It was designed around the massive 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R 2800 engine driving a huge 13′ 4 Hamilton Standard prop. The F4Us were designed with an inverted gull wing to both allow clearance for the prop and to keep the landing gear as short as possible. Long landing gear is not a desirable trait for a carrier based aircraft. The Corsair’s modern features included stressed skin construction, an enclosed cockpit, an unbraced single wing that folded to save space on board carriers, and fully retractable landing gear, although the outer wings were still partly fabric covered. The prototype first flew on May 29th, 1940. Later that year, it set a world speed record of 404 MPH. After much testing and revision, a production contract was issued on June 30, 1941. Production ramped up quickly and Brewster and Goodyear both license built the Corsair. First deliveries began in July 1942 and the Corsair saw its first action with the Marines on Guadalcanal in February 1943. The British received large numbers of F4Us and they saw much action in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Navy received Corsairs in October 1942 but declined to deck qualify the F4U due to the difficulty of deck landing, a problem the British solved by using a curving approach to the carrier deck, as the long nose made forward visibility impossible. Navy adopted this method and began operating from carriers 9 months after the British did. The Corsair saw extensive combat in WWII with the U. Navy and Marine Corps, and the British alone equipped nineteen complete squadrons. Twelve squadrons of New Zealand F4Us also saw action. The Corsair forged a name for itself in attacks on the Tirpitz and in action over Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Rabaul. The exploits of Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron are legendary and helped to make the Corsair one of the most recognizable aircraft of all time. The F4U was 32′ 9 long, and had a wingspan of just under 41′, which was reduced to just 17′ with the wings folded. Its R-2800 Double Wasp engine gave it a top speed of 392 MPH at 24,000 feet. The Corsair’s maximum range was 1,735 miles with drop tanks, making it well suited for action over the Pacific Ocean. Armament consisted of six 50 caliber M2 machine guns with 391 rounds per gun. This impressive firepower, combined with its high level and dive speeds, made the Corsair a fearsome adversary. F4U pilots quickly learned not to try to dogfight with more nimble enemy aircraft. While the Corsair became widely used from carriers, it came with a high price. It was unforgiving and suffered high attrition through landing accidents. Both loved and hated by its pilots, the Corsair nevertheless has an enviable service record and went on to fly combat again in the Korean War. Many restored Corsairs still fly today, and it remains a favorite of fans of aviation around the world. This item is in the category “Toys & Hobbies\Models & Kits\Aircraft”.
